Functional Medicine

A branch of medicine that explores the underlying causes of chronic, degenerative diseases such as cancer, heart attacks, strokes, Alzheimer’s, and autoimmunity, and applies strategies (diet, lifestyle, nutrients, natural medicine, treatment) that address these causes in order to help slow, stop, or even reverse the disease processes.

Intelligent SelfCare™: A suite of self-implemented health programs which offer safe-and-sound diet and lifestyle guidance; doctor-formulated, well-researched supplement support; and self-tracking charts to support one’s success in getting and staying well. The supplementation is designed to replenish the most common nutrient deficiencies, or to promote healing and rejuvenation in specific areas of need, including stress, sleep, detox, immunity, gut health, blood sugar regulation, and more.

Integrative medicine: A system of healthcare that integrates the best that conventional and “alternative” (or complementary) medicine has to offer, individualizing diagnostic and treatment recommendations based on the unique needs and circumstances of each person. Integrative medical care requires training in both mainstream and functional medicine, which honors the complexity of the human body and investigates the underlying causes of disease.

Conventional medicine: Also referred to as traditional, allopathic, “Western,” or mainstream medicine, this approach treats symptoms and disease primarily with pharmaceuticals, surgery, and radiation. Often quite effective in providing emergency medical care, it is far less helpful when attempting to prevent or treat chronic, degenerative conditions, such as with autoimmunity, cancer, heart disease, Alzheimer’s, and more.

Whole-person health: Acknowledges the interconnectedness of all aspects of our physiology (e.g., systems, organs, cells), and as such, all thoughts and actions (e.g., diet, lifestyle) impact the expression of our health and well-being.

Foundational Programs: Diet, lifestyle, and supplement recommendations gleaned from over four decades of Dr. Powers’ clinical observation and research. This program includes (1) “matched” foundational supplements (to your age, diet, health, and medication usage), (2) Dr. Powers’ book Foundations for Creating Optimal Health , and (3) support materials to improve your success in implementing healthy diet and lifestyle changes, all of which fundamentally foster your healing, well-being, longevity, and a longer healthspan.

Restorative Programs: Doctor-designed programs which include both evidence-based supplementation and specific diet and lifestyle guidance which fundamentally support the primary drivers of well-being—getting good sleep, managing stress, and reducing your body’s toxic load. These programs include evidence-based, targeted natural medicine in conjunction with highly researched diet and lifestyle guidance to safely and effectively (1) promote a more restful night’s rest, (2) manage stress and build resilience, or (3) gently facilitate detoxification. Each program also offers focused education and insightful guidance around sleep, stress, and toxicity.

Condition-Specific Programs: Doctor-designed programs which include both evidence-based supplementation and specific diet and lifestyle guidance targeting areas frequently needing support, such as immunity, gut health, blood sugar regulation, blood pressure, bone health, and more. Each program also includes focused education and insightful tips to help you make better decisions that safely promote health and healing in these areas.
